Keytree helps Shell deploy SAP Cloud Platform and Cloud Foundry

Royal Dutch Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with 82,000 employees in over 70 countries. The organisation uses advanced technologies, and takes an innovative approach, to help meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions. Shell Retail is the world’s number one mobility retailer, proudly serving 30 million customers a day, processing 11 billion transactions a year across 44,000 stations.

Shell Poland needed to automate one of its critical logistics-related regulatory processes, to meet ‘Poland SENT’ regulations. This system was introduced in Poland to eliminate fraud related to VAT, excise duties and other forms of tax, by accurately monitoring the road transportation of sensitive goods including oil-based products such as petrol, lubricants and brake fluids. To meet SENT requirements, Keytree was selected to work alongside Shell Poland’s IT group providing technical services and technology capability.

“Keytree demonstrated flexibility with the ability to adapt to changes quickly, their willingness to listen and take the right steps to drive the project to a successful conclusion on time made a significant difference between success and failure.”

Keytree helps Shell meet regulation requirements in Poland

The SENT regulation applies to regulated cargo, in excess of 500 kilograms or 500 litres, that is being transported from, to or within Poland. If transporting over this specified level, Shell is required to take specific actions to comply with the law. The Polish Ministry of Finance is responsible for ensuring these sensitive goods, including excise goods, have been recorded online in the SENT register as failing to do so will result in a sizeable financial fine. Therefore, organisations such as Shell must register cargo and provide location data to authorities when travelling in Poland.

To improve Shell’s management of all SENT related activities in Poland, Keytree implemented SAP Cloud Platform on Cloud Foundry technology to develop and manage all relevant processes. The agile project kicked off with discovery and design sessions to ensure all change requirements were handled optimally and to also ensure all manual interventions were eradicated.

The system, built by Keytree, is designed to handle the volumes of Shell Poland’s shipments, and responds in real-time to ensure data integrity is high. This has resulted in significantly increased efficiency within the operations team, with live monitoring providing accurate information for optimal handling.

This was the first Cloud Foundry project at Shell to go-live in SAP Cloud Platform infrastructure in Feb 2020, with Keytree managing the smooth transition.
